Steve Johnson

Director of State Engagement

Steve Johnson is Director of State Engagement at Federalism in Action and a fellow with the Center for Practical Federalism. Steve works with state lawmakers to strengthen federalism, improve legislative oversight, and restore accountability in government. Drawing on his experience as a former state legislator, Johnson helps policymakers develop and implement practical reforms that reinforce the constitutional balance between state and federal authority, while increasing transparency in government.

Previously, Johnson served three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the state’s 72nd District. During his final term, he chaired the House Oversight Committee, leading investigations into executive agencies, regulatory accountability, unemployment system failures, and the exercise of emergency powers. She also served as a member of the Judiciary, Tax Policy, and Elections and Ethics Committees. Prior to being elected in 2016, Steve was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force where he led a team of Airmen in performing maintenance on our nation’s nuclear missiles.
